Northrop Grumman to send home some workers in its Melbourne facility after an employee tested positive.

Northrop spokesman Tim Paynter said in a statement Wednesday afternoon that the employee has been quarantined and is receiving treatment. Workers in “workspaces the employee visited” were sent home so that the facility could be sanitized.

The company has asked employees who had close contact with the sickened worker to self-isolate at home.

Asked how many people will continue to work on the campus, Paynter said Northrop wouldn’t comment beyond its initial statement. FLORIDA TODAY received reports from Northrop staff that the infected employee worked in two out of the campus’s eight buildings while exhibiting symptoms.

Those buildings have been closed for cleaning, employees said, but many people will return to work at the campus Thursday.

As of 5:15 pm, Brevard had tested 13 people: six negative, two positive, five pending. An internal email sent at 5:56 to Health First medical staff reviewed by FLORIDA TODAY stated “additional COVID-19 cases have been confirmed today in Brevard County,” indicating that the number of confirmed infected people locally is likely to increase in the coming days.

The Florida Department of Health announced Tuesday Brevard’s first confirmed case. That patient was a 76-year-old woman who had contracted the virus after having contact with a known COVID-19 patient during travels in New York.

According to Florida Department of Health data updated at about 11 a.m. Wednesday, Florida has 314 confirmed cases, a jump of 100 since the day before. Seven have died. The surge in new cases followed Gov. Ron DeSantis’s announcement that the state would increase testing, purchasing 2,500 additional testing kits to give qualified state labs the capacity to test 625,000 people.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at noon Wednesday tallied 7,038 reported coronavirus cases in the US and 97 deaths. According to the World Health Organization’s Wednesday report, 191,127 cases have been confirmed and 7,807 people have died.

The coronavirus pandemic has triggered sweeping social isolation measures locally and internationally to slow the spread of the virus.

In Florida, K-12 schools have closed until April 15, with classes continuing remotely. Bars have been closed. Restaurants have been restricted to seating only half their capacity of guests and have been urged to switch to only providing carryout and delivery.

Brevard County closed beachside parking Wednesday, but beaches remained open. Already multitudes of businesses have closed and events have been cancelled. Local grocery stores have restricted their hours; Publix began closing at 8 p.m. Sunday to allow more time to deep clean its stores each day.

Brevard County declared a local state of emergency Saturday. It urged residents to follow certain guidelines including keeping six feet away from other people, avoiding large gatherings, remaining home when sick and washing hands thoroughly using soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. Hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol should be used if water is unavailable.

The county and health officials say people with symptoms should call ahead to their physicians, local emergency rooms or urgent-care clinics for screening before showing up to facilities.
